MOPH Urges President Obama to Approve The Comprehensive Veterans' Benefits Bill

WASHINGTON, DC -- Sep 30, 2010 / (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- The Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) salutes the U.S. Congress for its passage of a comprehensive veterans' benefits package which now goes to the White House for President Obama's consideration. Once enacted into law, this bill will expand insurance options for disabled veterans, upgrade compensation benefits and employment protections, authorize VA construction projects, and allow VA to keep using private physicians to quickly and accurately provide veterans with disability evaluations.

Specifically, the Veterans' Benefits Act of 2010, includes the following:

  • Raises an automobile assistance benefit for disabled veterans from $11,000 to $18,900.

  • Authorizes federal grants to provide job training, counseling, placement, and childcare services to homeless women veterans and homeless veterans with children.

  • Substantially increases the maximum levels of supplemental insurance for totally disabled veterans, as well as Veterans' Group Life Insurance and Veterans' Mortgage Life Insurance.

  • Provides retroactive Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance benefits for troops who were traumatically injured between October 7, 2001 and November 30, 2005, regardless of where their injury occurred.

  • Clarifies that the Uniformed Service Employment and Reemployment Rights Act prohibits wage discrimination against members of the Armed Forces.

Our collective hat is off to House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Filner and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Daniel Akaka for their diligence in bringing their respective bills to final passage. We urge President Obama to sign the bill as soon as possible.

Military Order of the Purple Heart

The organization now known as the "Military Order of the Purple Heart of the U.S.A. Inc.," (MOPH) was formed in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of all who have received the decoration. Chartered by the Congress, The MOPH is unique among Veteran Service Organizations in that all its members were wounded in combat. For this sacrifice, they were awarded the Purple Heart Medal. With grants from the MOPH Service Foundation, the MOPH and its Ladies Auxiliary promote Patriotism, Fraternalism, and the Preservation of America's military history. Most importantly, they provide comfort and assistance to all Veterans and their families, especially those requiring claims assistance with the VA, those who are homeless, and those requiring employment assistance. Through the VAVS program, MOPH volunteers provide assistance to hospitalized veterans at VA sites and State Veterans Homes.
