Release Text:
A Southern Illinois group that goes by the name of Sic1Eight has officially brought hip-hop to the "So ILL," and is preparing to take its rhymes and beats to the next level.

The three members of the group include Mr. Roush (Ryan Roush), Jay Dubb (Josh Winningham), and H. South (Cheney Haycraft), all of whom grew up the Southern Illinois area. They record music in home studios in Lawrenceville.

As a group, Sic1Eight has been recording together since 2006, but has recently stepped up their focus on the music. "Since the music's getting bigger and more people are listening to it, we've put a lot more effort into it in the last nine months," they added. The effort has included shows around their local area as well as farther out, including shows in Vincennes, Ind., and Owensboro, Ky.

The group recorded its first album, "So ILL," in their home studios, but recently pooled together resources and are currently putting together their very own, professional studio, in which they will begin recording their second album.

Altogether the group has recorded 100 plus songs, Sic1Eight said. The group devised the name "Sic1Eight" from the 6-1-8 area code in "the So ILL," otherwise known as Southern Illinois, which plays a large role in the music itself.

"Much of our music is geared for around here," Sic1Eight said, as the group is "trying to use hip hop as a way to describe life in Southern Illinois."

The songs are written from variety of inspirations, they explained, including personal experiences of the members and people they know, while "some is just storytelling."

In terms of the beats, Sic1Eight emphasizes the group's focus on melody and the hip-hop sound, now wanting the group to though of as gangsta rappers.

As influences, they cite Do or Die, 8-Ball & MJG, E-40, Tupac, UGK, Jay-Z, DJ Quik, the list goes on and on, but Sic1Eight likes to incorporate sounds from all aspects of hip hop. "We've just pulled from all different eras and areas of hip hop," they said. "All of its an influence."

The result is something unique to the music industry. "We definately have a sound like nothing you'll hear on the radio," Sic1Eight promised, adding, "Like nothing you'll hear anywhere."

The group appreciates all the support they've received so far as they prepare for the upcoming venues.

And for those who've never heard Sic1Eight, they advise them to "give it shot and listen with an open mind," adding, "We guarantee they'll like it if they do."
