Melvin Van Peebles Shares His Confessions at TFF

Melvin Van Peebles has a long history with the Tribeca Film Festival, which in recent years has screened the documentary How to Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (and Enjoy It) and son Mario's biopic Baadasssss! When no one would fund his film Panther, Jane Rosenthal and Robert De Niro stepped in. So it seems appropriate that his latest film, Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-Itchyfooted Mutha, premiered at the Festival this year. Van Peebles finished it just in time. Besides, he cracked, "Tribeca's in New York, and I'm lazy."

"I stand on his shoulders," said filmmaker Warrington Hudlin, president of the Black Filmmakers Foundation and moderator of the Behind the Screens event at the DGA Thursday ...

At Tribeca: Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha

How to introduce maverick factotum Melvin van Peebles with minimal slashes and addendums? One merely looks at the director/writer/producer/composer/star credits on his latest film, Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha (a top contender for the best title of all time, along with his landmark Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song). His wide surplus of talent...

April 21, 2008 - Still 'Baadasssss' (and indie as all get up)

Metro NY

Daniel Holloway

INTERVIEW: Melvin Van Peebles has been dismissed by Hollywood, embraced by France and lauded for creating one of the landmarks of blaxploitation cinema. "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song." But above all, he is an icon of true indie filmmaking, with a shoot-first, worry-about-the-money-later approach that few artists have the courage to employ.. his new movie, "Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha" is one of the most anticipated premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival

Q "Confessions" is an adaptation of a play you wrote back in the '80s, is that right?

A Yeah, I did a Broadway show called "Waltz of the Stork."...

April 14, 2008 - Van Peebles Publicizes Himself

Film Stew

By FilmStew Staff

At age 75, filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles is still up to his old anti-establishment tricks. Take the title of his latest autobiographical film, which co-stars son Mario and will have its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27th. Not one to surrender to the principles of short-is-better or make-sure-the-kids-know-what-it’s-about, the Chicago native has called his latest Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha (that's not a typo; Confessionsofa is written as one word). But what really caught our attention is the fact that Van Peebles, for the purposes of his upcoming Tribeca run and beyond, has chosen to give the new service MyPRGenie.com a whirl. Billing itself as “the world's first on-demand Internet provider of public relations services,” MyPRGenie.com takes the basic notions of a PR Newswire and essentially places them in the hands of the end user. “As an artist and indie filmmaker, my projects have relied on word of mouth - the 'buzz' factor - as well as critical approval to achieve success,” Van Peebles says. "MyPRGenie's 'Digital grass roots' methods appeal to my entrepreneurial spirit.”

March 20, 2008 - SoundClick Hires PR Firm to Promote Its Bands

Wired Blog Network

Unsigned bands can upload their music to any number of sites without attracting much of an audience. It's hard to make an impact when there are literally seven million other bands on MySpace, unless you luck out or participate in a sex scandal.

SoundClick, a ten-year old social music website with music, has retained a public relations firm on behalf of itself and its 3.3 million artists:

[MyPRGenie is a] self-service publicity engine to provide users with an opportunity to create their pitch, upload it to our system, and distribute pitches and stories to all types of publicity providers. The advantage of MyPRGenie is that users can employ MyPRGenie to communicate directly with targeted press, bloggers, analysts, or clients of their choosing. A client can also use MyPRGenie to selectively communicate, or target, certain types of reporters and editors in the media, based on that client's industry and focus. The engine is easy to use and costs are scalable.

Using the service, SoundClick artists will be able to distribute MP3s, text, photos, and/or videos to over 4,000 music journalists and bloggers.

Got a Great Business? Spread the Word

September 4, 2007

By Kelly K. Spors

WITH ALL THE demands of running a business, it's not uncommon for business owners to ignore a potentially lucrative tool: public relations.

Unlike advertising, where you pay for exposure, public relations means raising your profile more organically through interviews with news organizations, speaking engagements and building an online reputation.

It's also become easier for small businesses to grab the attention of traditional media without a professional PR firm. Press-release distribution services like PRWeb.com and MyPRGenie let businesses submit text for a Web site and they distribute the press releases to online news sites like Yahoo News along with predetermined lists of journalists who cover that type of business. PRWeb, for instance, charges $80 to $360 per press release. The higher rate includes better search-engine optimization, so your press release is more likely to be found, and you can attach a podcast or a video.

8 rules for a winning corporate press release

By Daniel Kehrer

For young entrepreneurial companies just starting out, a little publicity can go a long way toward jump-starting sales and boosting business visibility.

If you can afford it, hiring a public-relations firm or independent PR pro to handle publicity is a great way to go. They know how to create buzz, the right ways to approach the media and can take this task off your plate while you focus on other things.

But small businesses that can't afford traditional public-relations firms can still get noticed by writing and distributing press releases on their own.

Start Up Marketing: Public Relations

By David L. Anderson

...
For the techie who wants a virtual business model, there are a number of web-based PR sources that can be cobbled together to produce a virtual PR machine. You will have to do all the basic content preparation work yourself, as these technologies are primarily distribution channels for press releases. PRweb, vocus, MyPRGenie, and dna13, to name a very few, are all web-based technologies that will send your content to relevant(read:industry specific, but not targeted) Internet media outlets, print/Blog journalists and optimized search engines. None of my portfolio companies have used these services, so I cannot report back on the success of the offerings. They are very popular with web-based product businesses who are trying to drive consumer eyeballs to their sites. Prices range from $50 to over $500 per release, depending on the complexity (video attachments, etc) of the release. Other, more exotic fee-based plans are also available. In addition, some of these services also allow you to track mentions of your company in the print and on-line media, as well as let you configure Internet feeds providing you with news on industry trends and competitor releases.
