NEW YORK - April 7, 2008 - Melvin Van Peebles, the iconic and fiercely independent filmmaker and composer, will debut his newest film, "Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha," which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27 and has been chosen as one of six "most-noted" films at the event by Downtown Express, a New York City newspaper. The trailer for the "Confessionsofa..." has been posted on the website of his public relations solutions provider, MyPRGenie, and is available for streaming at http://www.myprgenie.com . The trailer is also available for download at http://www.myprgenie.com/attachment/download/773-1250-doofus-trailer-0101flv . The trailer is evidence enough that "Confessionsofa..." raises the bar of storytelling through the medium of cinema to a whole new level. Once again, just as with his earlier cinematic milestone, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" (1971), the silver screen will never be the same. "Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted Mutha" section will receive its world debut at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 27, 2008. "Confessionsofa..." is a tale of adventure, but first and foremost, it is a love story, a funky picaresque comedy filled with wily ruminations of our pilgrim alternating with epic action-bites as the hero stumbles through life. The film is an oxymoron of emotions - boisterous, joyous and sublimely tender at one moment, then hilarious and street-wise the next. This is the latest film for Mr. Van Peebles (as director, writer and composer) since the release of "Le Conte du ventre plein" (also known as "Bellyful") in 2000. A native of Chicago, Mr. Van Peebles is one of the most influential people in the history of cinema, and is renowned throughout the world as someone who broke the mold of traditional filmmaking and started the genre of modern independent cinema. His career spans more than 50 years, beginning with his filmmaking and composing debut in "Pickup Men for Herrick" and, later, "Sunlight" (both 1957). In the ensuing years, he has achieved popular and critical acclaim both as a filmmaker and actor in such groundbreaking films as "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song," which remains on Variety's list of all-time top grossing films. Mr. Van Peebles has received wide acclaim in Europe, especially for his 1968 film, "Story of the Three Day Pass" ("La Permission"), which was adapted from his book of the same name, in which he also starred and wrote the score. Mr. Van Peebles is also an accomplished playwright and musician, with Broadway credits that include (in addition to "Don't Play Us Cheap"), "Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death" (Drama Desk Award, 1972), and albums that include "Brer Soul" (1969), the soundtrack to "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song," and "As Serious As A Heart-Attack" (1974). In addition to the Drama Desk Award, Mr. Van Peebles has to his credit an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award (for the cast album of "Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death"), and the Humanitas Prize. In 2001, he was awarded the highest rank (Chevalier) in the French Legion d'Honneur for his service to the arts. Mr. Van Peebles was the subject of a documentary in 2005, "How to Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (and Enjoy It)." In his review of "Watermelon" in The New York Times, A.O. Scott praised Mr. Van Peebles, saying that he conveys "an air of mischief and self-confidence that suggests that whatever else he is, Mr. Van Peebles is that rarest of modern creatures: a free man."
